Is 2010 the Year of Divorce Celebrations?

28 January 2010

Celebrities are quite often the trend setters in our society, so will 2010 be the year of celebrating the divorce?

In 2008 it was Heather Mills turn to celebrate, and celebrate she did, reportedly spending £250,000 on a party when her divorce from Paul McCartney came through. In similar fashion, Katie Price spoke of the rationale to throw a divorce party, telling OK! Magazine, “it's not about getting your own back on an ex, it's all about celebrating the fact you are moving on with your life” . So, will divorce celebrations be the next event to hit our social calendar in 2010?

High-street chain Debenhams seem to think so, the retailer has just launched a divorce gift registry and even has advisors on hand for help selecting the right items. Some are branding this announcement as a distasteful approach to an already difficult situation, but is it instead a change in the stigma surrounding divorce?

Whilst divorce is a painful and stressful process it can be argued that celebrating its completion is merely a form of release to mark the end of a difficult time. Failing that, there is also the practical aspect of these announcements. With the marital homes’ contents inevitably being divided, there is an obvious need for a second toaster, set of bed sheets or whatever the newly homeless spouse needs in order to ‘start-over’.
